How to Dance Latin

General help with learning latin partner dances.

Quick Start

Video to be added: easyLatin

easyLatin (A simplified latin dance to get you dancing and having fun really quickly. You will also start developing some of the core skills useful for all latin dancing.)

Next you could do complete beginner rumba and salsa. These are both very similar to easyLatin. You will then be getting used to more different types of music.

Then you might do complete beginner cha cha. Cha cha adds extra steps which makes it more energetic but there is obviously more to think about. If you can get used to all three of these dances you are ready to do something to a lot of the latin tracks that might get played.

Depending on where you dance this might be enough. You can always do a slow salsa to a bachata so that covers that possibility. If you also learn merengue then that will help you dance to many of the other types of latin music that might get played.

Cross-Body-Move

The cross-body-move (or cbm) (or cross-body-lead) is a popular social move. It is dynamic and gives the follower the chance to do an energetic movement past their leader. It creates future opportunities to add travelling turns.

Improver Style Options

Some dancers will make the first movement (which I often refer to as "off the piece of paper") on the first beat of the bar and some on the second beat of the bar. This creates a very different look. Many people believe their way is the only way but the reality is that different people dance it differently. I personally like to vary between the two options depending on who I am dancing with and the music being played.

Video to be added: Latin Improver One or Two

Latin Improver One or Two (It is possible to dance using the first or the second beat of the bar. This is discussed in this video.)

Demonstration Dances

Finally, here are some demonstration dances to give you more ideas of how a partner dance can look.

No demonstration dances yet. Remember I need volunteers so if you want to get trained for free and then record some demonstration dances please contact me.
